Sama Alshaibi’s Hornet’s Nest, from her Carry Over series, has been featured on the cover of the latest issue of JMEWS: Journal of Middle East Women’s Studies.
Using the albumen print process, the work reimagines the Orientalist water jug as a form holding both violence and resilience. Through 19th-century photographic techniques and Alshaibi’s own body, she revisits these histories to expose rather than reclaim them. The figure stands alone and self-possessed, rejecting passivity and asserting a sovereign presence.
