The panel is in connection with an exhibition titled The Guggenheim: The Making of a Muesum. The exhibition surveys a watershed moment in the history of Western art when artists turned away from realistic, figurative art and developed various abstract styles, some of them entirely nonobjective. These artists drew on many and diverse sources including African and Islamic art. The Panel will examine the relationship between abstraction in Western and Arab art from the early 20th century to today.
