Nihad Al Turk

Nihad Al Turk’s haunting mixed media works are compositions that rage against the injustices of the surrounding world, an approach reinforced by his methodology: oil paint is scratched with pencil lines to create deep grooves representing the shackles that chain his characters. Devoid of localised traits, richly symbolic canvases are dominated by weathered floral arrangements, heavy shadows, corpses and deformed mythological creatures, half-human-half-beast.

Born in Aleppo, Syria in 1972, Nihad Al Turk lives and works in Damascus.  Selected solo and group exhibitions include Ayyam Gallery Beirut (2011); Ayyam Gallery Damascus (2009); Mark Hachem Gallery, New York (2008)  Diyarbakir, Turkey (2005).
