Mouneer Al-Sharaani
Biography
The pioneering work of Mouneer Al-Shaárani has had a major influence on modern Arabic calligraphy. Born in 1952, the calligrapher, book and print letter designer has spent his life liberating the practice from its golden cage of rules and regulations, awarding it a fresh spirit amid deep roots of tradition.
Having served as an apprentice to the acclaimed Syrian calligrapher, Badawi Al-Dirani, Al- Shaárani continued his studies at the University of Damascus Faculty of Fine Arts. Today, the acclaimed art critic balances his practice with writing, teaching and exhibiting. A passionate advocate for the natural evolution of calligraphy, he works on silkscreen with China ink and gouache; gliding effortlessly between calligraphic scripts. Al- Shaárani's compositions are a perfect balance of meaning and movement. His choice of colour, script and sentence harness the beauty and spirit of Arabic literature.
Al- Shaárani's work can be found in leading private and public collections. He has exhibited in major venues throughout the world, including the Malaysian Museum for Islamic Arts and the British Museum.
